You are overweight, and you have high blood pressure. These are two of the symptoms of metabolic syndrome.
Next question: are you insulin resistant? Have you ever had a glucose tolerance test? You can do it yourself with a glucose meter you can pick up at any drugstore for $35-50.

And why am I asking? Excess insulin levels cause high blood pressure. There are other causes, which is why you need to test, but high insulin levels are one of the most common. And if you are insulin resistance and you eat carbs, you will have high insulin levels.
So, if you're insulin resistant and have high blood pressure, restricting carbs can significantly lower your blood pressure.
I've been on a low-carb diet since June, and I've been off my blood pressure meds since October. My BP, which used to run around 140/100 when I was taking the meds, is now running around 110/75 without the meds.
Never take medical advice from some random guy on the internet, but do, please, look into whether or not carb restriction might be appropriate for you.
Thanks for the info. I have an appointment tomorrow with my doc and will look further into this. My Dad has a glucose meter, I think he has an extra one too, I'll see if I can borrow it.
